The Pancake Eating Hippo is a palm-sized creature that one can occasionally glimpse on a kitchen table on Saturday mornings when pancakes have been served. They are fairly timid and prefer to eat when no one is watching.
They are territorial, hiding in the back of kitchen cupboards, but if you offer them pancakes, they will cautiously come out.
After a maple syrup forest was felled in a terrible storm and all the sap leaked into a river. Then someone started feeding birds near the river with old pancakes. The little hippos tried it and liked it. A young boy watched them eat the old pancakes soaked in the river and wanted to see what happened if he fed them fresh ones. The hippos followed him home and they have been household monsters ever since.
